Transition and
accessibility

The issue: Accessibility in higher education and successful transitions, a challenge for collaboration and inter-level concerted action

The transition from one level of education to another and access to higher education are two distinct issues, but they share the common goal of educational success, for which collaboration and concerted action are essential. Of course, the preparation of each student is an important factor in making the transition from one stage to the next, persevering and succeeding, but this is only one dimension. Both access to CEGEP or university and the transition from one stage to the next are influenced by a number of factors.

Collaboration and consultation are commonplace within a school or between educational establishments of the same level, though not without difficulties. But such efforts are even more challenging across educational levels. This is why PIM has joined forces with the Trajectoires project, set up by CEGEPs, school boards, the Regroupement des cégeps de Montréal and Réseau réussite Montréal, to help increase the number of high school graduates making a successful transition to college or vocational training. To learn more about the high school to CEGEP transition (called T3, as it is the third transition in a student's educational path), visit this page on the website of Réseau réussite Montréal. Inspired by Trajectoires, PIM has created a CEGEP-university concertation table, known as Table T4.

Aim

The aim of this axis is to deploy high-level cooperation between institutions on the island of Montreal, in order to support actions that promote accessibility to college and university studies, and the fluidity of inter-level transitions and training paths.

Priorities
2024-2025

Through the Table T4, PIM is committed to four work areas:

01 - Transitions for students with disabilities

Research mandate for the Centre de recherche pour l’inclusion des personnes en situation de handicap (CRISPESH) to fill the gap in shared understanding and information circulating between institutions at both levels of education, and to gain a better understanding of inclusive pedagogy practices. Colloquium project organized by the four regional clusters in higher education of the Montréal region (Laval, Lanaudière, Montérégie, Montréal) on issues of cooperation and collaboration between CEGEPs and universities in the inter-level transitions of students with disabilities.

02 - Essential skills for student success

Monitoring activities to identify priorities for action on essential skills for students success, with particular attention to the challenges posed to higher education by generative artificial intelligence.

03 - Data culture

Feasibility study for a CEGEP-university transition dashboard.

04 - Development and follow-up of joint CEGEP-university projects

Follow-up and support for CEGEP-university joint projects on transitions and accessibility, and definition and launch of a call for projects in line with the Table's priorities.
